ΒΑΣΙΛΕΩΣ ΑΛΕΞΑΝΔΡΟΥ — “OF KING ALEXANDER”

ΒΑΣΙΛΕΩΣ ΑΛΕΞΑΝΔΡΟΥ ~ VASILEOS ALEXANDROU ~“OF KING ALEXANDER”

The inscription ΒΑΣΙΛΕΩΣ ΑΛΕΞΑΝΔΡΟΥ, meaning “of King Alexander,” is one of the most iconic marks of ancient Greek coinage from the Hellenistic period. These coins were minted during and after the reign of Alexander the Great, whose conquests reshaped the known world.

Typically found on silver tetradrachms and other denominations, the inscription often accompanies the image of Heracles — symbolizing strength and divine lineage — or Zeus, representing kingship and authority.

Circulating from Greece to India, these coins became the standard of trade and trust, their consistent weight and design ensuring use long after Alexander’s death.

Today, they endure as glittering relics of empire, offering historians and collectors a direct connection to the era of Hellenistic expansion, unity, and cultural exchange.
