HYPNOS ~ THE GREEK GOD OF SLEEP

In the Greek Religion, Hypnos ( Greek: Ύπνος,"sleep")is the God  of sleep. He is a son of Nyx and Erebus and His twin brother is Thanatos ("Death"). Both siblings dwell in the Underworld.

Hypnos lives in a cave, where no natural light or sound ever enters. His cave is also the place where the river Lethe springs from.In front of his cave, there are a lot of poppies and other plants known for bringing sleep. Homer mentions that Hypnos also lives on the island of Lemnos. He is a calm and gentle God, as he helps humans in need and, due to their sleep, half of their lives belong to Him. According to Hesiod, Oneiroi ( Dreams ) are also His brothers and they travel every night from the Underworld to bring dreams to humankind.

In Homer’s Iliad, Hypnos is ordered by Hera to lull Zeus to sleep so that She and Poseidon can aid the Greeks in their war against Troy. As a reward for his services, Hypnos is given Pasithea, one of the Graces, as His wife. Also in the Iliad, Hypnos and His brother Thanatos carry the body of Sarpedon home to Lycia, after he is slain by Patroclus.
