ALEXANDER THE GREAT DEPICTED WITH BUDDHA ~ HADDA, AFGHANISTAN

When sculptors of Hadda in Afghanistan wanted to represent Vajrapani, the protector of the Buddha, they opted for a syncretic picture of Alexander the Great under the features of Hercules. Thus the impact caused by the conquest of Alexander the Great in India at the end of the 4th century BCE continued throughout the centuries, leaving reminiscences of the past in the spirit and the behaviour of the various populations of the region, both Greek and Asian.

The statues in the above photo were in Tapa-i-Shotor.
